The brief
As part of a widespread expansion programme at Lancaster Prison, the Ministry of Justice is building two new house blocks at the Lancaster prison site, along with a workshop and storage buildings. Integral to delivery of the scheme is the extension of a central thoroughfare, running parallel to the prison perimeter, with temporary lighting to be installed throughout, illuminating the site throughout this three-year construction project.
Main contractor, Kier, is managing the works and were keen to use a combination of off grid solar lighting to power the main entrance as well as a grid solar panel/wind system with battery back-up, to power the main site cabin hoarding lights 24/7. This approach would resulting in zero cabling used with zero power consumed and a rapid install time.
Implementation
Financial constraints where key and the specification of traditional street lighting and infrastructure proved to be cost prohibitive. A solar solution from Omnisolar , alongside a wind turbine system, was recommended and a pilot period established to monitor and review the products in-situ.
For the solar and wind turbine solution, a bespoke fitting was designed and proposed, introducing a concrete block base with columns in situ to support the placement of fittings. With the light fitting mounted in place, the fitting was able to attract sufficient day light to operate at full capacity, 24 hours a day (batteries and inverter both stored externally).
Following a successful pilot period, a full programme was commissioned incorporating some 26Vista Lights.
All products where installed within x week period.
The Product
Vista 6000
Usability:
- The roadway lighting uses the Omnisolar Vista-6000 All in one unit and can be remotely operated from ground level. Fitted with both detection sensor and CCT options.
- The Vista 6000 units are ‘Dark Skys’ compliant and use ALS Battery heating to ensure longevity and performance through the winter months
- The Vista 6000 fittings are durable, marine grade and can be moved around different site areas with ease.
- All components used on this project are 100% recyclable.
Solar and Wind Turbine
- The solar and wind turbine charges a battery unit which is topped up by normal mains power if the solar or wind isn’t sufficient (backup plan in place)
- The systems generates three-phase AC power, converted to DC by the charge controller
- Monitor wind speeds to optimise power generation and improve efficiency
The Process
Understanding the specific needs of the client was critical, and a bespoke system was required, incorporating special product casing and fixture, as well as technology.
A fully off grid energy system, combining solar and wind power, was specified, the wind turbine offering back up support to the solar charging, ideal for use in cooler months.
The Benefits
- The system negated the need for costly generators generating instant savings
- Minimum installation costs
- Zero running costs
- Zero maintenance costs
- The products light up the road only and do not reflect upward onto trees therefore do not disturb wildlife in trees
- All carbon reduction targets are met
